Kat is considering joining me on a Celtic Invasion Vacation. But she had a few questions.
She writes: “I know this is probably basic for you but I have never been able to traveling a lot, so I really don't know what Europe is like. So I need a closer budget to see if it is even in the vague realm of possibility. Just curious for estimates on the flight closer to the date. Best I could find right now was $900 I know it will change closer just give me a guess. Lunch probably in the $10-15 a meal higher, lowerish? Are drinks comparable? Are prices in general comparable? I'm not really asking for specifics. Anything I might be missing?”
When you start travelling and aren't familiar with the tips-and-tricks, it can get confusing. Now, for the Celtic Invasion Vacation, the current price for our next adventure runs around $2400, which covers all land-travel. Dinners and breakfasts are included. When considering lunches and meals in Europe, it all depends on where you eat and what you want to spend – usually, you can find something that is about the same cost in the United States, but always consider the conversion rate. Most of the time, you can expect to spend a bit more on food and drinks, and don't forget that you don't get free refills!
Now, getting a passport is also a cost to consider – that price varies on how quickly you need it. Airline tickets vary throughout the year, though you can find some pretty good deals on flights through Aer Lingus, if you're able to leave through major ports (Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, etc). Getting there can also cost you, but that's more flexible. Prices often drop at some point between 3 and 6 months before departure, so it's important to keep an eye on prices. For flights to Great Britain or Ireland, I usually expect between $1200 and $1600.
For new travelers, flying straight to your destination is usually much less hassle and worth the price difference – if you're adventurous, adding different modes of travel (such as by train), can be great!
