What Color Is Your Podcast?

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

autoharp for sale

Nicole posted a comment on my Facebook fan page saying she was thinking about What Color Her Podcast was. That made me think I should remind you about this unique idea…

“OMG, I think that is the best $$$ I ever spent.”
– Robin S., Missouri

In 2008, I was really worried that I wouldn’t get booked at DragonCon. But I love the convention so much that I decided to find a way to go no matter what. The way I decided was to get an Eternal Membership.

Eternal Memberships aren’t cheap (and even more expensive than it was two years ago). To raise money, I came up with fun and unique promotional idea called “What Color Is Your Podcast?” The idea is that you pick ten of your favorite songs of that I play, and  I record a podcast Just For You.

In the past ones, I chatted with folks about the music, made up stupid songs on the fly (that was embarrassing), and just had a fun time all around.

It’s a fun project for me and great music for you as well. Best of all, the podcast is ALL YOURS! So you can do with it what you will. Give the file to your friends. Burn copies and share it.  Or even Horde it for yourself, until I become super-famous, then send it to auction where it sells for 3.2 million dollars. Whatever. Just have fun and enjoy the show.

Sadly, I didn’t raise enough money to buy an Eternal Membership that year. But happily, the band got booked. And in 2010, two years later, I’m STILL  performing at DragonCon. And solo too! (Here’s hoping for many more!).

Now and then someone like Nicole asks about having their own podcast made. And I am happy to oblige.

So go ahead, pick ten songs that you want to hear me sing. Place them in the order you want. I will record a special podcast dedicated to you! An offer like this should cost you thousands of dollars. I mean, after all, it’s like hiring me to record a CD for you. But You can be a part of this for a pittance.

Oh! And you can also do the podcast as a dedication to a loved one, a birthday, anniversary, proposal, whatever. Have fun with it! And for now, you can even save a wee bit o’money.

Cost: $100
(regularly $150)

Good Things Come to Those Who… Plan!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

I talk quite a bit about what’s up and what’s to come in my Pub Songs Podcast. Tonite, I’m in the blogging mood. So I thought I’d write a little about what’s going on with me. And what you can expect to come.

I spent much of today working on shownotes for my various podcasts. They were all with purpose. As you know, my wife and I are having a daughter in October. I don’t quite know what to expect once Kenzie is born. But I’m sorta guessing I’m not gonna have a lot of time to do anything. I figured planning my podcasts ahead would be a smart move.

Today’s planning included some special downtime episodes of the Pub Songs Podcast, a month’s worth of Renaissance Festival Podcasts, and a project I shouldn’t bother with, but… it’s what I do, the St. Patrick’s Day Podcast.

No. This is not like the Celtic Christmas Podcast, where I play episodes of other podcasts. Instead, I’m putting together six shows starting on September 17th (six-months til St. Patrick’s Day). Each one will feature a bunch of artists you’ve heard on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. But this show is designed for two purposes: one, to give you a bunch of great music to listen to on St Patrick’s Day with minimal vocal interruption, and two, to promote independent Celtic music groups. That’s it.

The notes are mostly done. I just need to mix the shows together and start promoting them. So I hope you might help me out in doing just that once they are ready.

The next item that I’m working on is  general Celtic music promotion using iMixes (if you use iTunes, I’d love your help).

Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen some great success by promoting my Celtic music on iTunes. My Victims of Irish Music compilation CD is not only a great compilation of instrumental Celtic music, but it’s currently one of the top albums for “Irish music” and “Celtic music” on iTunes. That means all of those amazing artists are getting their music heard.

I confess, the success of the iMixes is also helping my music to climb the charts. I talk about The Bridge a bunch. It’s my favorite of my CDs. But with a title like “The Bridge”, it doesn’t inspire action. But on iTunes, where keywords rule the world, songs like “Peggy Gordon” and “Wild Mountain Thyme” have a great chance of success. (Email me and I’ll share my super-secret tips for how you can help me out even better with iTunes.)

Anyway, that’s the start of what I’m working on. But there is more. In fact, I know I said I was only gonna record one more album this year (Kilted For Her Pleasure), but I’m thinking of recording another. My wife suggested that I record a Celtic Christmas album. So if I can plunge through some of these podcasts, I may well look into it.

I confess I’m excited overall. I’ve never done so much planning so far ahead. It’s really cool. The rest of my year is pretty much booked with the exception of a couple local gigs. I’m already planning for St. Patrick’s Day 2011. I have a lot of great new CDs, which, with any luck and a lot of sales, will help me wade through the financial challenges of raising a newborn.

Best of all, I have You rooting for me. Have I said, “thanks” recently?

Well, thank you. I’ve seen a lot of glowing support these past few months. Everyone seems to be getting more and more excited as I release more podcasts and new music. I get emails daily about people sharing stickers, sharing MP3s, telling their friends how they found my music. It’s beautifully humbling. So again, thank you.

It’s an exciting journey, and I’m glad to have you along for the ride!

Slainte!

Brobdingnagian Bards Reunion Concert at DragonCon

Monday, July 12th, 2010

You were wondering when or if it would ever happen (I mean every band does it). Last week, I broke the news in my Pub Songs Podcast Science Fiction Convention music.

Nearly two years after going our separate ways, Andrew and I have decided to reunite on stage one more time at DragonCon.The Original Celtic Renaissance, the band who launched the Celtic MP3 revolution, my old band, the Brobdingnagian Bards are gonna do one more show on Friday, September 3rd at one of the biggest Sci Fi Conventions in the world. And you have just one chance to catch our group before we continue on our separate ways.

So experience a rebirth of some of our most-popular songs like “Jedi Drinking Song”, “Do Virgins Taste Better Medley”, “If I Had a Million Ducats”, “Exclamations”, and a ton more.

Then, once you’re done enjoying the Bards Reunion show, come catch our new incarnations.

Andrew is now playing in a duo called Flynn’s Folly along with our old friend Michelle Hedden. Michelle played bodhran on a couple of my albums. She’s brilliant! And of course, Andrew is a master at musical improv and writes some amazing melodies. I haven’t heard the new group perform, but I’m sure you’ll have a great time catching them at the Con.

And of course, I will be back once again, performing solo. I play Celtic music, the traditional and the twisted. And if you haven’t seen me perform recently, you’re missing out. I’m told that my on stage performance is better than ever. And the new songs from my new album Kilted For Her Pleasure are just a blast on stage for interactive fun.

The convention is less than two months away. So now’s the time to start planning and to get your tickets.

Oh! And don’t forget  you’ll be able to pick up Kilted For Her Pleasure at the convention. You’re gonna love this CD!

Finally. Please. Please. Tell your friends to come out and see us perform!

Would You Review “The Bridge” For Me?

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

First, let me say that I LOVE my next CD Kilted For Her Pleasure. The album is just plain fun. It’s kilted Celtic comedy music with a lot of songs that I love to play live: “Close Your Eyes”, “Kilted For Her Pleasure”, “Monahan’s Mudder’s Milk”, “A Drop of Vulcan Blood”, “The Widow and the Devil”…. And the list goes on.

That said, my favorite album is still The Bridge. The songs fuse a bit more blues and jazz and American folk. It’s overall more ballady, but it’s also fairly upbeat, and just plain… delightful.

It’s beautiful. Produced by Rich Brotherton, the instrumentation is just amazing. And I love the songs. Wow, do I love those songs! I will be speaking its praises for years to come.

That said, I’d like to get your thoughts on the album.

Right now, there are only a few reviews on CD Baby and none on iTunes.

Would you do me a favor and post a few comments about the CD?

Review The Bridge on CD Baby

or Review and/or Rate it on iTunes

It will just take a moment to do. Because you don’t have to write a long-detailed review. Something short and sweet that says why You enjoy the CD will do.

Thanks in advance for  Your help!

Marc

New Music Promotion Tips with an eBook to Come

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Several years ago, I was actively publishing The Bards Crier Music Marketing Newsletter. Every week or so, I sent out an article with guerrilla music promotion tips for bands. The ezine was highly praised by many of the best music marketers online, including Bob Baker who wrote the Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook. I must’ve done something right!

Eventually, I decided to focus on making music. However, one question has lingered to this day. Why isn’t there a book of music promotion tips not for bands, but for their fans?

You see, there are plenty of resources these days for independent musicians to promote themselves. There are none for the fans. And yet, all the great bands were defined by their fans. Fans who actively promote their favorite band will help that band become more successful faster.

And so, I have decided to take to this challenge. I will start a series of short posts with a variety of very specific tips on how to promote MY music.

If you enjoy it, please follow the tips that you are able to follow.

If you don’t care about what I do, that’s fine. Follow the tips to promote your favorite band. Help them out. Then share these posts with others who want to learn more about promoting independent music.

Oh! One final note. If you have comments or promotion tip suggestions, please post them in the comments below. I’ll add the best tips to the list as I go. Feel free to include active examples.

Latest iTunes Music Promotion

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

iTunes likes their iMixes. They like them so much that top-rated iMixes typically push songs up the charts. It just so happens that when songs are at the top of the charts, this equals greater sales and more notice for the artists in the iMix.

Because of this, I put together a new iMix every few months or so to promote the independent Celtic music artists on the Irish & Celtic music Podcast.

My latest iMix features music from bands who were featured in my various compilation CDs and bands who were chart toppers in the Celtic Top 5.

You can help indie Celtic musicians!

1. Go to my latest iMix and look it over.
2. Listen to samples of some of the tracks.
3. Rate the iMix.
4. If you see a track that you like, buy it to support indie Celtic music.

That’s all it takes.

Here’s the link to the Best of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast #2 iMix:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewIMix?id=379869264

Thanks for your help!
Marc Gunn

PS. Wanna help with more iMixes?

Mostly, I want you to focus on that iMix above. However, if you have time and you’re in the mood. It only takes a minute to rate an iMix. So why not rate one more more of the following iMixes as well:
