Marc's Musings

Live from Things Celtic on St. Patrick's DayGreetings <:firstname:>,

Torre is sitting in my lap right now. If "I'll Tell My Cat" wasn't true before I recorded it for Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers, I think it is too true now, "I am so whipped my kitty". Ah well... There are worse problems than loving your cats.

NEW: VICTIMS OF IRISH MUSIC AND IRISH DRINKING SONGS
I made some pretty aggressive News Years Resolutions this year. Thus far, it looks like I may even meet them. My Resolutions include
the completion of several CDs. Last month, I finished my long-awaited compilation CD that benefits the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It's called "Victims of Irish Music", and contains seventeen tracks of instrumental Irish and Celtic music from some of the best independent Celtic groups around. I love this CD and haven't stopped listening to it since I finished it.

The second CD is "Irish Drinking Songs: The Cat Lovers Companion".
The music is all mixed and mastered. Now I just need to complete the
graphics for the album. Otherwise, it's finished. I hope to officially
release the album on July 1st. However, if you can't wait, you can
purchase the MP3 Album now on my website. The CD features all the
traditional Irish drinking songs that I parodied on "Irish Drinking
Songs for Cat Lovers". And it's already getting rave reviews.

THUNDERING PAWS IN AUSTIN AND CALIFUR IN CALIFORNIA
If you've never seen me perform songs from "Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers", you're not alone. I don't play those songs with the Brobdingnagian Bards. And only rarely play solo shows.

Two of those rare opportunities are taking place in the next couple weeks. The first is Meow, Woof, and Dine, a benefit for Thundering Paws, a cat shelter located just outside of Austin. I've wanted to meet these folks for a long time. Now at last I can share my love of cats and Irish music with them and others in Austin.

The weekend after that I'm flying to Costa Mesa, California where I was invited to perform at CaliFur, a furry convention. I'm really excited about playing there. I've even talked to a few Irish musicians in California about jamming together at the convention. And for those who aren't into the furry culture, I have a pub booked Sunday night in La Crescenta. It will be an exciting event all around, so please join me and tell your friends.

Then halfway through May, the Brobdingnagian Bards hit the road again. We're driving to Colorado with a few stops along the way. Keep an eye on our calendar for details.

HELP SAVE TARA
Ever see "Gone With the Wind"? That's where I first learned about Tara. The Tara in the movie was based on the original seat of power of the High Kings of Ireland for thousands of years. It's now a grassy knoll with an incredible history.

I've never been, and I hope to see it one day. However, I may not get a chance to experience it as it is. Why? It looks like a proposal is going on in Ireland to build a highway near Tara. IMHO, it's a huge threat to the preservation of an ancient culture, a tragedy. Well, you can do your part to preserving this cultural heritage.

Check out AnamCaraFestival.org to find out how you can help preserve a piece of history.

I hope you're well and may your heart be filled with joy. Slainte!

Marc's Lyrics & Poetry

Valley of Opportunity
by Marc Gunn, March 30, 2007

After twenty-five years of wearing glasses, I had LASIK Eye Surgery. It's like being able to see for the first time. It is magical.

I remember free climbing a mountain
on the North Shore of Oahu.
The rock crumbled as we climbed,
But turning to look at the ocean,
To see the long waves strike the island
The danger and the precariousness
of our exploit vanished from my mind
Until we reached the top
I looked out across the valley
    and saw...

        Water stains on my glasses.
The rain was too heavy.
I couldn't see a thing.

The dream of seeing that valley
And the nightmare of denial
Has haunted me until this day.

It rained today.
And a simple jaunt down the stairs
outside my apartment to check the mail
into the rain opened a new dream for me,
A dream of possibility, of renewal.
It was like seeing rain for the first time.
Water skipped down my head
I squinted to protect my new eyes.
The wind blew water droplets
    over my body.
My shoes soaked through
But through the cascades of brilliance
I SAW for the first time.

I saw a chance to experience rebirth,
To live a new life,
Where the Valley of Opportunity
    is laid before me as
    a clear path to hope.
