It was either 1996 or 1997 when I first decided to let my hair grow out. Even when it was a lot shorter people (and by people I mean women) seemed to like my hair. I decided to let it grow. In 1998, I quit my day job to become a musician. I failed miserably. Six months later, I was out of money and desperately trying to find a job. I applied to the Air Force in December, 1998. They never called me back.
At the end of the month, I was hired by the University of Texas at Austin in the Registrars office doing desktop publishing. I began practicing on the South Mall. I started the Brobdingnagian Bards. I never cut my hair again… well, for anything more than a casual trim. It grew and it grew. I had beautiful long hair. That was 1999. Fourteen years later, after loads of people admiring and complimenting me on my beautiful hair, I decided to cut it all off.
I LOVED having long hair.. and not just because women loved it. I just loved how I looked with it, particularly when I got Lasik Surgery six years ago. I used to imagine what I'd be like when I grew older. My dad had beautiful gray, and now white hair. I dreamed I'd keep it long until it turned a beautiful white mane. But times change.
Over the last few years, I noticed more and more that I didn't wear it down. My hair was always pulled back, even at shows. Too often, it would get caught in my autoharp strings during those rare headbanging sessions. I just didn't feel like letting it down. I bean thinking about cutting it about a year ago. However, it wasn't until a couple weeks ago when I mentioned it to Gwen that I finally felt ready to do it.
Gwen was blown away by the idea. She never knew me to have short hair. But she is ever the awesome, supportive wife. So she encouraged me to give it a try IF I wanted. I told her I would wait until it warmed up a wee bit. It was decently warm today. So off we went to the hair salon.
Chop. Chop. I donated it 10″ of hair to Locks of Love.
It was cold and windy when we left the salon. Brrr… My head is still cold. But it feels GREAT!

Glad you’re liking it!
Marc, you look fabulous now as always! 🙂 I’m glad you feel good about your hair!!
MarC, your hair looks GREAT short. You look younger too. What does the daughter think of it and her daddy.
Uncle John in Atlanta TEXAS
You still look great.
It is sad to learn you had to cut your hair, but I applaud you for donating to Locks Of Love. One of my sisters does that, and it takes time to get used to her in short hair. I still want to interview you for my blog (as a Gunn Clan cousin)
Short hair is just as sexy as long. The best thing about this? IT GROWS BACK. 😉 Awesome new look!
You look great Brother, reminds me of the JOn Bon Jovi reboot. as long as the music doesn’t change do what makes you happy. And you are awesome for donating to Locks of Love. I tried to do that years ago but couldn’thandle it even a bit long. But, what a wonderful charity to donate to.
All the best and Happy Birthday next week!
Marc, you look wonderful, and I am so glad that You like it. The donation to Locks of Love is awesome as well.
This Okie misses you at OKRF, and I hope you come to play and sing for us again someday soon. Lots of love to you and your lovely family, and enjoy the breeze!
I’m sad that I never got to see you perform in person with The Long Hair, but if it was in the way of you’re playing, I can see why you would make the change. You can always grow it out again if you want. 🙂
@Beth Thanks. Who knows what I’ll do with my hair in the future. I’m a creature of change. So ye never know. Right now, I’m thrilled it is gone.
Thanks for all of your support. It was a big decision. I never thought I would chop it off, but there ye go. Times change.
