2 Toughest Things About Songwriting

I'm currently engaged in my Song of the Week Challenge. My goal is to write a new song every week. It doesn't matter how good it is. I just want to write. Then I will record the song and share it with my Patrons at www.marcgunn.net.

I haven't written a lot of new music over the last few years. Instead, I've sought out new songs by friends. I love writing music with Rie Sheridan Rose. And I will again. Yet, I got in the music business to be a songwriter. And I haven't been writing many songs.

My goal the past couple years was to release some traditional Irish and Scottish songs for my Irish Song Lyrics website. I haven't really shared those song lyrics. I've also decided to veer away from playing at most Irish pubs. So I've lost focus.

Thus it's time to get back into writing. Hopefully, I'll write something that I love and you love that will become a regular part my live performance and eventually turn into a CD.

In the meantime, I've noticed some challenges:

The Two Most Difficult Things about Songwriting

  1. The Idea. As soon as I have a good idea for a song, the lyrics flow like honey. It's easy. But until that happens… It's like pulling teeth.

I have started to write down song ideas. The latest is a song called “Browncoat Baby” which was inspired by all the babies at DragonCon wearing Jayne‘s hats.

  2. Stopping When I'm Done. I have a LOT of work to do each week. There's podcasts, videos, blogs, mailing products to fans… The list goes on. I also have a family I want to be a part of. But as soon as I get in the songwriting mood, my mind gets stuck there. That's one of the reasons I got out of the habit. It's tough going back and forth from business man to artist.

I just finished recording the aforementioned song and I want to keep writing. But I have other work to do. So instead, I will finish this blog and get back to work.

Thanks so much for being a part of my music. Enjoy the new weekly music. Slainte!
