When someone asks me what I do, I typically say, “I play sci fi drinking songs. It's Irish and Scottish songs inspired by science fiction and fantasy.”
But after publishing my Celtfather podcast on “Anthems, Pledges, Change, and Seth Godin“, I realized that my music is actually something more. It's something I've tried to figure out how to explain.
My music is about being different.
It's about being comfortable and happy about those differences.
And it's also about honoring the differences of others.
I have never fit in. And I tried.
Going to Judson High School in San Antonio, I was the outcast. I played D&D. My friends were all nerds and geeks. I had very few friends, like two.
I moved to Italy for my senior year of high school. I tried to Change myself into a “cool kid”. But two months later, I was hanging around geeks…just like me.
It's who I am.
I am different.
My music attracts people who are different.
Maybe it's the autoharp. Maybe it's the Celtic music (not top 40). Maybe it's Firefly or Lord of the Rings. Maybe it's the cats.
Heck! Maybe it's the podcasts when others listening to radio…
I don't specifically know why you listen. But I believe a big part of it is that it's different. And you're different. You're not the average person. You're exceptional in an average world.
I guess my goal is to have my music help you feel confident about being different.
Because once we say, “I'm proud that I'm weird,” it's easier for your all of us to say, “You're different from me. And I like that.”
Seems to me that's the best way to for us to get along in a fragmented world
