57,000 people showed up in Atlanta to attend to attend DragonCon, one of the largest sci fi conventions in the world. It's just huge. The whole convention is overwhelming. In fact, the last six or seven DragonCons I've done left me wiped, sick, or stressed. That all changed this weekend.
This year, Andrew McKee, my bandmate with the Brobdingnagian Bards, joined me for an entire weekend Celtic madness. We had one show each night, plus a Hobbit Drinking Songs show with the Tolkien Track. We had Filk track panels and I had three Podcast panels. There was even one show at the Concourse. It was a wild rollercoaster ride, but it was also pretty relaxing considering I'm an introvert and there were 57K people in attendance. Oh! And we haven't played music together in a year.
I must say it was a spectacular weekend. There's never enough time to do all things I long to do there, but I still got to see a few things. I enjoyed the company of friends. I jammed with one of them. And we put on some great shows. They energetic, fun, and totally bizarre, and off the cuff. [in best Czech accent] We're two wild and crazy guys!
The show was so much fun in fact, that we decided we're gonna do it again next year… Well… if DragonCon accepts us. That's always the catch. This year, our reunion show got us some top billing and an early announcement on the website. Next year? Probably not. But the Filk Track asked us to keep coming back. So as long as they are willing, we are too.
Next year, I also plan to have my album Sci Fi Drinking Songs officially released. So I'll host a show on that very topic. We will also have a Firefly Drinking Songs show. I tried to get that in the Whedon track this year, but no such luck. I'll try again next year. If I can't get it there, we'll do it in the Filk track. And of course, to the 400 people who couldn't make it into the Hobbit Drinking Songs show, my apologies. The Tolkien track leader heard your excitement. We WILL have a bigger room with proper sound next year!
Before this convention, I was starting to wonder if I could continue to perform at DragonCon. I was worried it was just too much. But the winds of change are here. The phoenix has arisen. I hope you'll join us in 2014!
