This week, I dropped an email to Kristie Davis a fan who's traveled far and wide to see me perform with the Brobdingnagian Bards and solo. She tells me, “I first heard your music several years ago on a knitting podcast by Brenda Dane called Cast-On. She always played cool music and one day she played Virgins and Dragons! I was hooked, and looked y'all up and haven't looked back since.”
Kristie loved the Brobdingnagian Bards' song “Do Virgins Taste Better” so much that she “fake” Irish danced the song at a number of performances, and she's been following me ever since.
Kristie is of Celtic descent and enjoyed Celtic music even before she heard about the Brobdingnagian Bards. She loved our music of Celtic/RenFaire that she later learned was defined as Filk. “The live performances were always a blast and you never knew what to expect from the two of you.”
She continues, “I know you well enough to know what to expect now – in your solo act, but it's never been stale and you've continued to add new songs and incorporate a few other styles as well. I love all the Firefly stuff and have told-I don't know how many people the-story of you winning the contest with Saffron.” However, her favorite song is my solo version of “Wild Mountain Thyme”.
In her “real life”, Kristie Davis is an anesthesiology, but when she's out and about, Kristie is also known as “the Dread Captain, the Lady Dragonwing – airship pirate and belly dancing Celtic Goth chick!!” She tells me that I first introduced her to the music of Voltaire, which led her to the Goth scene in NorthWest Arkansas, and eventually to a ton of cons and music festivals.
Now she's a regular at Dragon Con, A-KON, Steam-Con, and Wild Wild West Con. And of course, she heads out to at least one Renaissance festival each year.
Her favorite bands include: Brobdingnagian Bards and Marc Gunn for Celtic music; Abney Park, The Ghosts Project, Jill Tracy, Unwoman, Escape the Clouds, Unextroidinary Gentlemen for Steampunk; for Goth she loves Voltaire, Ego LIkeness, the Cruxshadows, Depeche Mode, Concrete Blonde, The Last Dance, Faith and the Muse and Hellblinki. She's also a fan of Loreena McKinnett, Sarah McLachlan, Sarah Brightman, and Beats Antique.
She considers herself fortunate with regards to music because she has met many of the aforementioned musicians and can call many of them friends, me included.
She adds, “This is truly a fantastic time to be an indie performer, with the internet and the ability to self-produce and not have to “toe the line” with regard to the big record labels.”
Finally, when she's not wandering the country to see her favorie musicians she's still knitting and “always dancing!!!”
