SCOTTISH WHISKY & HIKING

  • Taste Scottish whisky and hike off the whisky in some of Scotland's grand locations. To that end, we will fly into Inverness. Drive through Speyside, past Edinburgh into the Lowlands before making our way back up to the Highlands. We will hit at least three of the Scottish whisky regions with this plan. But it's not just about the whisky. It's also about the hiking. We will spend 1-2 hours in between tastings to hike local sites, take pictures, and soak up the countryside.

WILD FOR SCOTLAND: EPISODE 8: ‘AN ACQUIRED TASTE’ – ISLE OF ISLAY

  • ‘An Acquired Taste’ is a story about turning hate into love. The first time I tried single malt whisky, I found it awful. It took moving to Scotland, going to many distilleries and making myself try one dram after the other, to slowly mature my tastebuds. Eventually, I fell in love with Islay whiskies and was fortunate enough to join a whisky tour to the island and visit all 9 of its distilleries.

ON THE TRAIL OF LAUREL AND HARDY – THE COMEDY DUO'S TRIP TO IRELAND REVISITED

  • On the trail of Laurel and Hardy; LAUREL & HARDY: The Last Dance of the Cuckoos is the story of Stan Laurel’s bowler hat making a return visit to Co. Cork. Photographer Andy Hollingworth and cinematographer Matt Holt take a road trip — with Stan’s headgear — beginning in Cobh and finishing at the Olympia in Dublin. The film, which follows in the footsteps of their comedic heroes Laurel and Hardy, visits the duo’s other stop-offs points in Ireland and features interviews with some of the relatives of those who were in Cobh on the day. These include Rob Wilson the son of the pharmacist who took photographs of the arrival.

CELT IN A TWIST: MAY 19, 2024

  • There's a method to this week's Celtic madness. Take a song or two, add a fiddle tune, rinse and repeat. Introducing the flying fingers of Mary Frances, the 17 year old daughter of Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy. Her first album is appropriately, First Light and we debut ‘Cheerio'. Maggie's Wake serve the Bond theme with a twist of ‘Shaken Not Stirred'. There's lots more to love this week on Celt In A Twist!

WALKING THE ‘OUTDOOR CAPITAL OF SCOTLAND’: 25 YEARS OF THE CATERAN TRAIL

  • The carved face of a cateran stares out of the way marker before me. Deriving from the Gaelic word ceatharnach, meaning a lightly armed warrior, “cateran” later came to denote the cattle raiders particularly active here in Strathardle, Glenshee and Glen Isla up to the 18th century.

  • EMERGING from the Irish Sea, invigorated by my morning swim, I’m welcomed into a cosy, wood-fired sauna overlooking the sands at Laxey, £10 for 30 minutes (Greencreek.im).
  • I’m on the east coast of the Isle of Man and it’s safe to say I’m already falling for this self-governing island, which sits just a three-hour ferry ride from Heysham in Lancashire.
