GLENS, LOCHS AND ISLES BATTLE TO BE SCOTLAND’S NEXT NATIONAL PARK

  • Glen Affric in the Highlands is home to deer, ospreys, otters and one of Scotland’s largest Caledonian pine woods. Often described as one of the country’s most beautiful glens, its scenic landscapes and diverse wildlife are such that it is protected as a national nature reserve.
  • Now, local community groups have launched a bid for it to become Scotland’s third national park, in a race which has so far seen more than 10 other areas also submit their interest.

THE HOBBIT FIRST EDITION BOUGHT FOR £1.50 COULD FETCH THOUSANDS

  • A first edition of The Hobbit bought at a car boot sale for £1.50 could be worth thousands of pounds if sold at auction.
  • The text was among a box of random books a bargain hunter picked up at Bath Racecourse – after he knocked the seller down from £2.
  • He then plonked them in his garage to gather dust for the next five years.

WE JOIN CORNISH WASSAIL TO BLESS TREES WITH TOAST AND CIDER

  • Apple trees were ‘awoken from their winter slumber' as people took part in an old tradition involving slices of toast and plenty of cider. Marking its tenth anniversary, St Ives Community Orchard hosted its annual Apple Wassail, a traditional ceremony to bless the trees for the year ahead, and thank them for last year's fruit.
  • The custom of wassailing goes back centuries, and is a blessing of orchards to encourage a good harvest in the coming year. After filling their glasses with cider and apple juice made from the St Ives Community Orchard fruit, people gathered around one of the trees to sing the traditional Wassail song, before placing slices of toast that had been soaked in cider on its branches.
