Celtic Music Magazine: The Great Selkie

Céad Míle Fáilte,

Madainn mhath, it is your editor, Todd. In this issue we have a new episode of our very own Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. We also have new episodes of Folk on Foot and Mostly Folk. The articles in this issue include one on a beautiful beach in Cornwall, volunteers wanted to count seals, and three tributes to Sinéad O’Connor. The second on is from Psychology Today, and mental illness is near and dear to my heart. Which is why included two tributes. We hope you enjoy this issue.

You have just 23 hours left to make a pledge to our Celtic Earth Kickstarter.

HOW TO TREAT FEMALE ARTISTS BETTER AFTER SINEAD

  • Respect for the dead, disrespect for the living, and my playlist for you of an extraordinary singer and songwriter.
  • I used to find her scary when I was a young adolescent. Too fierce. A handful. The things that these artists were singing or shouting about were things I didn’t want to confront.
  • Sinéad never seemed afraid of appearing vulnerable. Of course, this is why the whole world fell in love with her, but only in one version of herself: staring at us straight down the camera, with tears running down her face.

Please read this article about respect for female musicians.

PAINSONG: A TRIBUTE TO SINEAD O’CONNOR

  • Can music have an important impact even beyond controlled, clinical, settings? The life and work of Sinead O’Connor, who died on July 26, 2023, at age 56, pose that difficult question and suggest some possible answers—relevant to both our personal, and public, lives. O’Connor was 18 when her mother died in a car crash. Six years later, in her 1990 debut album, O’Connor sang her pain in her cover of Prince’s ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U.” While Prince wrote it about his romance, O’Connor had her mother in mind, wishing “she can hear me, and I can connect to her.”
