Greetings! I'm Marc Gunn. I play Sci F'Irish music. It's musically inspired by Irish and Celtic songs. But they lyrics are inspired by pop culture.
Come Adventure With Me continues in that vein. You'll get an album fusing traditional music with a healthy dose of original songs inspired by Firefly, Doctor Who, Marvel comics, Hobbits, Dungeons & Dragons, and Celtic culture.
My mission is to complete at least 10 tracks to inspire you with hope for a great adventure.
WHY COME ADVENTURE WITH ME?
I host a podcast with my fellow geek rock musician friend, Mikey Mason. We write songs inspired by pop culture. The podcast is called In the ‘Verse. Initially, we watched every episode of Firefly and wrote a song about it. A few of those songs will release on this album.
The latest season explores other media, including Doctor Who, the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon and the 1977 Rankin & Bass film, The Hobbit. The song I wrote for that episode is the title track of the new album.
I love this song for many reasons. The story is much like one of the main themes of the movie. It's about overcoming your fears.
I started playing music in the '90s because I wanted to be a songwriter. I don't feel like I actually became one until we started this podcast. I didn't think I could write a song on command. And…I was afraid to try.
The In the ‘Verse podcast allowed me to overcome my own fears so that I could tell better stories in song.
The song also takes me back to the early '80s. I had just moved to Texas. We watched The Hobbit in my 6th grade class. Shortly after that, I discovered Dungeons & Dragons. It opened up my imagination to a world of hobbits, dragons, and adventure. It helped me overcome my fears.
It is through my adventures, both physical and metaphorical, that I found happiness. I found like-minded people. I saw new places and experienced new things. I came into my own love of music. I made fans around the world. I met the love of my life. We had two amazing children. Together, we've gone on many grand adventures.
I may not travel nearly as much as I would like to. I don't go on tours these days. But that's okay. My adventures with music and stories are boundless. Each song is a new adventure.
So I want to invite you to come adventure with me!
WHO IS MARC GUNN?
I'm just this guy. Ye know.
You can listen to my music on Bandcamp, Spotify, or YouTube for free.
I'm a Scots-Irish American musician from Texas. I now live in Atlanta, Georgia with my amazing wife, two daughters, and four cats. I've played music solo since 2008. I've won awards for both music and podcasting. I'm still a member of the Brobdingnagian Bards and host of the largest podcast of Celtic music in the world–Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.
I've released 23 albums since I started recording solo music in 2004. I love creating and sharing new music.
WHY SHOULD YOU SUPPORT MY KICKSTARTER?
I got an email from my last Kickstarter. One person said, they could've saved money if they hadn't bought the CD via the Kickstarter. Technically, they were correct. But that truly misses the point.
But it gave me pause. Why do you support one thing or another?
I realized. I don't make money with streaming music. But Streaming music gives You a quick and easy way to sample all of my music, basically for free.
My Gunn Runners Club on Patreon funds my songwriting! It allows me to make a living with my music. It allows me to bring a paycheck to my family every month so I don't have to get another job.
However, there are folks who don't want to support a monthly Patreon page. And I don't make enough to fund the production of physical products like CDs, shirts, album pins and other merch. That's where Kickstarter excels.
I plan to officially release this album in next year. But in what format? Do you still want CDs? Do you like the album pin idea? Do you want alternative ways to support and listen to my music without a CD?
That's what you're paying for here. You are raising money for CD production. You help fund the new Album pin idea. If I can earn enough, then I can ALSO fund additional Album Pins from my past albums.
WHAT ARE ALBUM PINS?
Album pins are basically lapel pins. But you don't just get the pin. You also get a digital album that is specifically linked to that pin. Like when you pledge for the Hobbit Album Pin, you get a digital copy of Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits. The Firefly Album Pin gives you a digital download of my second album of Firefly drinking songs, As Long As I'm Flyin'.
I love these new Album Pins because it allows you to literally wear your albums on your sleeve.
Or in this case, on a lanyard that I'm also gonna fund with this Kickstarter.
WHAT'S ON COME ADVENTURE WITH ME?
I don't have a final track list at present. I have a lot of completed songs. My plan is to fill up an album with about 30-40 minutes of music. There will be a traditional Irish song and tune. There will also be two of my favorite songs to sing–“Come Adventure With Me” and “Blink”. Both were featured on the In the ‘Verse podcast.
Here are the tracks that are done so far:
- COME ADVENTURE WITH ME – a song about overcoming your fears as inspired by The Hobbit
- MOLLY MALONE – traditional Irish song featuring Jesse Ferguson
- SELKIE'S LIFE – original song inspired by Celtic mythology
- FAVOR OF A DANCE – Firefly-inspired song about confronting the spoken and spoken rules of society and it features Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer
- BY AMAZING GRACE – a song about fighting back against toxic masculinity. It is inspired by the TV show Firefly and features Andrew McKee and Jamie Haeuser
- DON'T BLINK – a Doctor Who-inspired song about not missing out on the great moments of our lives
- REAVERS DRINKING SONG – comical song about the reavers in Firefly who are treated like savage, unthinking beasts that can still fly space ships… surely they have drinking songs too
- SPIDERWEB – a humorous song inspired by Firefly about the games we play with love
I'm planning on at least 2 more tracks. But there could be four or more.
