I got a phone call last night from Voltaire. He heard about Filk Track panel I'm at–How To Make A Living In The Music Business In The Digital Age. He loved the idea and asked to join the panel. Seeing as how it was a panel of one, I thought he'd make a brilliant addition.
I can't help but wonder how many of the many Guest Musicians at DragonCon make a living from music. I'd guess, only a handful… five maybe (not looking at the list). Many try to do it. Few succeed. However, it is not an impossibility. It just takes a lot of hard work and patience. I worked 16+ hour days for several years until I quit my job and continued that routine until I met my wife and got married. I thank her for saving me from the pain of sitting in front of a computer all day. I was starting to have some serious issues.
That doesn't mean everyone has to follow in those footsteps though. That's the best thing I got out of those long days, I learned what to do and what not to do. I got a lot of perspective. I understand the music business much more than I ever did. And as always, I'm happy to share my knowledge.
I'm looking forward to sit down with Voltaire and hear some of his thoughts on the same topic. I hope you'll join us.
