Well, there's some good news and some bad news regarding the upcoming Firefly Drinking Songs album. But for those who don't listen to the Pub Songs Podcast or follow me on Facebook, let me explain.
There's a Sci Fi Western TV show that came out many years ago, that I love. It's called Firefly, and it was produced Joss Whedon. Though the show lasted only one season, but it had some of the best writing on TV.
One of the episodes called “Jaynestown” features a song about one of the characters (Jayne) in the show. It turns Jayne has become a folk hero and even has a song written about him.
That made me wonder what other songs might've been written in the Firefly Verse. So I wrote a song called “Monahan's Mudder's Milk” to answer the question. I recorded it a couple years ago and released it this year on my latest album Kilted For Her Pleasure. Then I had another brilliant idea. What if I recorded an entire CD of drinking songs from the Firefly Verse?
Well unfortunately, I didn't have enough songs to finish an album. But after I wrote another Firefly song in August, I thought, “Why not record a live album with my friends the Bedlam Bards. They have LOTS of Firefly songs?!”
So at DragonCon and FenCon, we set up a couple shows and recorded a Firefly Drinking Songs album… or at least tried.
Today, I finished mixing and mastering all the tracks from those live shows. We got some great recordings. It's gonna be a nice sounding live CD when it's done. Just imagine an evening in Canton on Higgin's Moon, and you have the idea. It's straight, pub song fun from the Firefly verse. Unfortunately, there are two songs that did not come out. So we've decided to record one more show to finish the album.
I don't think I'll be in Austin again until February for Sherwood Forest Faire. So that's a starting point. Some time before or after the faire, we're gonna find a nice pub, and setup a special show. I hope you YOU will be a part of this amazing live event.
The details will be coming in the months ahead. Just stay tuned and plan on coming to see us in Austin next year.
Oh! And don't forget to watch the TV show. It rocks!
