Give a Tip with Venmo

My family and I were walking back from dinner in downtown Decatur on Saturday. A musician was strumming his guitar. He had a sign that read, “Venmo…” followed by his name.

Wow! What a fantastic use of technology!

It stuck out in particular because that morning I was at Pepper Place Farmer’s Market in Birmingham. I drove all the way over there.

And I forgot my wallet.

Fortunately, the car was full of gas. And I had a credit card on my iPhone. Plus I was heading to a gig where I would get tips, and maybe cd sales.

Everything worked out in the end. I had an impressive number of cd sales for the market. Most were credit card sales. But the one cash transaction and tips meant I was in a good place to buy lunch and drive home with no problems.

Except the cash game is a pre-21st century problem. The world’s becoming more digital. Streaming is more prevalent. Cash is no longer king.

Some day I might not need to worry about carrying a credit card… or a wallet, at all!

How weird is that?!

This is especially relevant as I do my Coffee with The Celtfather show every Wednesday.

One of the big reasons I do these shows is the same as for every show—to make a living with music. I want to sell CDs, gain new patrons, and earn tips.

To that end, I signed up with Venmo today to offer another method get tips.

And apparently with Venmo, I get all of the money you send. There are no fees. That’s pretty cool.

And of course, next time I forget to bring my wallet someplace, I’m covered!

Don’t miss the show tomorrow morning at 10:30 am EST on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Slainte!

Marc Gunn, The Celtfather
