Glancing Back in the Rear View Mirror

by Marc Gunn, February 11, 2005

A poem reflecting on a woman I dated a while back and saw again not too long ago.

Glancing back in the
rear view mirror,
Seeing beauty with a strawberry
glow and golden hair;
Hints of reason
Made desires swollen
in suptuous lips,
Valentine cheeks,
And eyes that light up a
room.
She has a way that
connects the dots
of an imperfect universe,
While I ponder two dots
That blossom and glow
Into anthems of motherly
love.

Our eyes dart across darkened waters
And back to the serene
silence
Overdue to two fish
Out of water,
Flopping around admidst circumstance
and timing,
Like the photo album
in the hands of a four year old boy
Reaching, yet ever untouched
Longing for a simple cup of Joe
To press to her lips
While cars speed
past with lights
blinding an aroused
imagination.
