I made the most boring Shepherd’s Pie ever… Can you offer a good recipe?

Yesterday, I cooked my first-ever Shepherd's Pie. It's cold, I had a craving. So I searched the internet and found a Shepherd's pie recipe. It was fairly easy to make, but it was the most-boring tasting meal. Absolutely nothing to write home about.

Have you ever made Shepherd's Pie? I'd love a GOOD recipe.

  1. Shepherd’s Pie is one of those things that when it’s good its really good but all too often it ends up just, meh.

Sorry I don’t have a recipe myself but if you come across a good one please spread the love.

  2. I don’t know that I’ve ever had a “traditional” Shepherd’s Pie, so I don’t really know what it’s supposed to contain/taste like. Being that I’m Italian and Irish, I tend to Italian-ize mine.

First, make a batch of garlic mashed potatoes. I’m American, too, so I usually cheat and use a boxed version, to make it easier/faster.

Next, chop and sauté in extra virgin olive oil an onion. Once softened, add chopped garlic. Add a pound (or more) of ground beef and brown. Drain well.

In a 9″x13″ baking pan, I combine the ground beef mixture, 2 cups frozen peas, 2 cups frozen corn, a small can or 2 of sliced mushrooms (drained), a can or 2 of Italian seasoned diced tomatoes, a small jar of whatever prepared spaghetti sauce I have in the pantry; stir, well, to combine everything. Depending on what else I may have on hand, I may chop up a couple carrots and add them. Sometimes, I’ll add some frozen green beans. Just experiment with the vegetables that you prefer.

Top it all with the garlic mashed potatoes. Cover with foil and bake at about 375F for 45 minutes or so. Remove the foil. Top with shredded Parmesan cheese and bake uncovered for another 10 or 15 minutes.
