- Van Morrison along with high calibre guests celebrated the raw, rootsy sounds that shaped his artistry. MICHAEL J. McDONAGH was at the Royal Albert Hall to witness the occasion
- When I was under the age of 11 and still at an Irish Christian Brothers school in Cheshire, one of my happiest memories was staying at my friend’s parents holiday chalet in North Wales and spending hours in the garden playing Lonnie Donegan 78rpm records on a wind-up gramophone. It was about 1956 and we would sing along and try learn the words, captivated by the new and exciting sound of skiffle.
CELTIC SONGLINES: SUNNY SPELLS
- As we endure summer's heat, “Glass of Water” and “Sunny Spells” are titles found on this week's playlist. Arriving soon on the West Coast is the band Téada, they're on the playlist as are the bands Charmas, Clannad, and from the UK we have Salt House and Moore-Moss-Rutter. Also joining the session are Irish vocalist Nuala Kennedy, Ghizela Rowe with a reading of Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry, Bob & Carol Pegg, Shide & Acorn, Tommy Maken & Liam Clancy, the band Solas and Vincey Keehan.
HMS UNICORN RECEIVES ‘GAME CHANGING' £1.1M RESTORATION FUNDING
- HMS Unicorn, Scotland's oldest ship, has received £1.11m in funding towards its ongoing restoration and preservation.
- The preservation work is restoring strength and robustness to the hull to improve resilience ahead of a planned move to a nearby dry dock.
TEN MINUTES WITH JOHN LYNCH
- John Lynch is a folk singer and songwriter from Dublin. He is closely inspired by his immediate surroundings. Previous release Guardians told the story of the famous chimney towers in Ringsend, Dublin
NATIONAL GALLERIES SCOTLAND REVEAL OPENING DATE FOR NEW GALLERIES
- The National Galleries of Scotland has announced that the Scottish galleries at the National will open to the public this coming September.
- The new spaces will be home to key works from the nation’s historic Scottish art collection, offering more than double the physical display space and transforming the visitor experience.
