Marc’s Musings: Bubble Wrapping Kittens

We adopted two kittens last year, Pompeii and Emmie. They are adorable. But it’s always amusing when cats do something bizarre and unexpected.

Both our cats are in the bad habit of chewing up boxes. But this weekend, Pompeii got bored with simply destroying boxes. Now he's digging inside them and pulling stuff out. He drops them on the floor like a bird he caught and killed.

It started with bubble wrap from our attic. He brought one down. Then another. And another. There were a good dozen pieces by the end of the day.

At first, I took the bubble wrap upstairs and put them back in the opened boxes.

That was dumb. He just brought them back down.

Then I found and closed up a box that I thought he got the bubble wrap from.

I felt like it was over.

It was not.

The next day, he came down with more bubble wrap for our flatware.

Say, what?!?! I went up stairs to see where they came from.

The attic is poorly lit. At 48 years old, my eyes are pretty crappy. So I looked. I thought I found the box. I closed it back up. I doubled checked for any other possible open boxes. I didn't see anything. So again, I thought this was over.

We woke up this morning to find bubble wrap on our bedroom floor. We walked into the dining room. There was MORE bubble wrap.

In fact, there was even a champagne glass, wrapped in bubble wrap, lying (unbroken) with a pile of other bubble wrap.

GAHHH!

This time, I brought up a lantern. I put on my glasses to help me see. I combed every inch of the attic. I found one box that was probably the culprit that I missed. I found the wine box open with more wine glasses lying (unbroken), wrapped in bubble wrap on the floor.

This time, I used packing tape to close up ALL of the boxes. I hope he's done.

It was cute…

But darn it! Stop outsmarting me, Pompeii!

Do your cats have any similar stories?

Slainte!
