One of the things I love about Ireland and Scotland is the proximity to water. I love the ocean. I love swimming, diving, the sound of the crashing waves, the feel of the water. I love seafood. I love boats, the beach, and exploring tide pools. But I also love the stories.

Enter this week's Pub Songs & Stories…

THE SELKIE

I love the story of the selkie. This is the Celtic legend that some seals can remove their skin and walk on land as a human. I think one of the classic stories is the young woman who removes her skin and goes to land. She meets a man who finds and hides the skin. He marries the woman. They have kids. But then the woman finds the skin. She immediately leaves everyone behind and returns to the sea.

I didn't grow up with this legend. It was “The Great Selkie” by Avalon Rising that first made me aware of the story. Then came The Secret of Roan Inish.

Most of the selkie of legend were women. According to Wikipedia, there are male selkie however.

And now as I write this I feel like I should seek out some of these legends. Have you read any good stories? Email me.
