Marc’s Musings: What A USELESS Degree!

I studied cultural geography in college. Well… to be honest, I fell into cultural geography. I bounced around a dozen different degrees and settled on that one.

Cultural geography sounds (to me) like a useless degree. What's funny is that I actually USE my degree. I travel. I interact with different cultures.

I was at CONjuration this past weekend. It's billed as a Magical Fantasy convention. But it's basically a Harry Potter convention. Several hundred people heartwarmingly gathered to celebrate their collective love for the Harry Potter stories.

And I got to be there!

Not just perform there but BE there. I got to experience the magic of a unified group of people who love Harry Potter…

A week earlier, I was at The Lost Druid Brewery experiencing beer and brewing culture. MultiVerse was before that with lots of science fiction and fantasy authors. A farmer's market, a gaming convention, Wheel of Time fans, Celtic music fans, autoharpers, filkers…

These are all different subcultures of people. I get to share my music with them. In return, I experience their passions. It's like a tiny glimpse into a world of hope and joy.

It's exhilarating and it makes for some great Stories!

YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS…

THE STORY OF MINGULAY BOAT SONG

I love the new Pub Songs & Stories podcast. There are so many stories I never shared about songs that I love to sing. Some are not the best stories for a concert or are too long. “Mingulay Boat Song” one has many different layers. That includes why sometimes it is called “The D Song” by my wife.

If that's not cool enough, I get to share a story by Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer about one of my girls' favorite songs, “Jiggle the Old Bones”. I love Vicki and Jonny. I'm so happy to share this story.

You can listen to the Mingulay story here.

Make sure you subscribe. Because next week, COAST shares a riveting story about a musician who saved all the passengers of a sinking ship. And I talk about “Wild Mountain Thyme”.
