The mega-talented Anne Roos has a new recording out, and it’s packed full of tracks that are sure to please anyone who loves the gentle, yet vibrant sounds of the harp. The musical artist also features flute player David Blonski alongside her, which is a lovely pairing of sounds—one is enriched by the other.
The 15 tracks on this generous offering of music provide a relaxing selection of tunes that are as soothing as they are expertly played. Timely, the sound of this collection lends itself well to the holidays, and it can easily be played as a backdrop to a family party, a selection for a fireside toast and chat, or something to daydream to on a snowy day. It’s very versatile. Somehow, the tunes selected manage to be festive without being too obvious—which can be an issue with most holiday music! Those searching for the perfect soundtrack—one that offers class paired with holiday spirit—will find this the perfect pick for the season.
The recording is the result of three years of work, and it shows. Every note sounds out with confidence and clarity, and the quality of the collection is excellent. Of course Roos is no amateur—she’s an accomplished musician with many impressive credits to her name. She has played the Celtic harp for the Lord Mayor of Dublin Ireland and other dignitaries and has had her music played on United Airlines, among many other accomplishments. Her music typically spans a wide range, from traditional folk tunes to a Celtic Harp version of Stairway to Heaven, and more. This collection of songs is more on the “old world” side of things, which is part of what makes it such a great fit for the holidays.
Listening to the selection of songs here, it’s hard to pick favorites. Each track is delightful, and the rendition of Pachelbel's Canon is particularly lovely. I must admit to a certain fondness for The Cutty Wren—perhaps because it makes me feel like I’m smack-dab in the middle of an enchanted forest, but in truth every track here is worth the time spent listening.
It’s easy to tell that Roos has spent many years honing her craft. There’s a confidence to her playing that comes out of that time, and it’s truly a pleasure to listen to. “A Winter’s Dance” is aptly named, well-arranged, and chock full of tracks that feature a combination of holiday spirit and folk-style charm.
