I saw something interesting last year. It was about the legacy of St Patrick.
I saw several memes pointing out darker side of St Patrick's Day. I feel like a day of reckoning is coming. Much like it came with Christopher Columbus and other historical figures and holidays.
First let me say, I am not Catholic. So the holy holiday is never what the day has been about for me. To me, it's a celebration of Irish AND Celtic culture.
However, the story of St Patrick is about a monk who drove the snakes out of Ireland. Symbolically he drove the pagans out of Ireland. He drove out the folk legends and lore of Ireland.
I thought about this last year. For me, St Patrick's Day is just a holiday to celebrate our shared culture (and my birthday, course). The name is ultimately unimportant as long as we are celebrating our heritage. It's not a holy day. Heck! I don't even think of it as an Irish day, but rather a day for all Celts to celebrate.
I feel it is important to ask these questions. We should do it before others ask it for us. I don't think it's right to just dismiss other people's concerns. We should listen and learn. We should also change, when it is for the betterment of our shared community.
What are your thoughts on St Patrick's Day as a holiday? Showing compassion for others, how would you kindly address this question?
