What a great weekend! Kilted Kings we’re booked at Mid-South Renaissance Faire, but with a twist. We played as a three-piece instead of two.
I love my band because it gives me a place to explore traditional Celtic music more. All year long, I play mostly Sci Fi Drinking Songs. Those are my most-popular songs. They’re the ones people share. And I love playing them.
But I also host the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I have for 13 years. I love the traditional music of the Celts, particularly instrumental Celtic music.
The simple fact is, I am a singer. I don’t get many opportunities to stretch my Celtic music roots. It’s why I’ve started writing Irish tunes.
Kilted Kings solves this problem for me. Our debut album, Name On My Soul, had several original Celtic songs, a few Celtic covers and of course some reels and jigs. I love the album.
Playing with the Kings this weekend reminded me why I love this band. But it was even better because at this show we had String of The Lost Boys playing fiddle for us. We worked out a new set of Irish tunes.
And it rocks!
I mean truly Rawks! It’s like a flashback to some of the tune masters I love like The Tea Merchants and Clandestine. Except not as good and I GET TO PLAY THE TUNES!
I wish we had more shows. For now, there’s just one more weekend at Mid-South in Memphis. We shall we what the future holds.
In the meantime, checkout Kilted Kings new Christmas single on Spotify. It’s “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” complete with some rock in’ lilting.
