A Random Bit of Life WITHOUT an Algorithm

Do you know what I miss? I miss the early days of the internet when an algorithm didn’t tell me what to look at.

It’s not because back then I learned SEO and charted really well on Google. It’s because when I went looking for Celtic music on Google, I found some interesting websites. Not static videos filled with three hours of “Celtic” New Age music.

I discovered some great bands and websites back in the day. I never visit websites any more. Google is largely obsolete now Because of their algorithm.

This is also the reason I rarely look at Facebook. It’s another rabbit hole of things I don’t want to see. I like discovering new things. That’s one of the things I love about my podcast. I get to find and share new bands. But Facebook is a crappy place to share what I love. Because as soon as I tag some amazing bands, this post will get fewer views.

I’d like to say I’m not alone. But every day people are monetize more and more by Facebook and Google. Which is fine. But they’re not providing what we truly want… a personalized experience that’s not defined by an algorithm, but by a little random chance. Just like in life.
