Last Thursday, my daughter Kenzie had her surgery. We went to the hospital at o'dark thirty and waited nervously throughout the day to learn if she was okay.
This was the big scary one. It was open-heart surgery to fix the ventricles, close the shunt, and add a valve to the aorta. It was performed on bypass. So her heart was stopped for an hour and half as they fixed the problems. Happily, she made it through without complications. Friday, she was grumpy and tired. She was on medication much of the day. But we saw that little light in her eye that said, “I'm fine.”
By Saturday, she was feeling pretty decent. The doctors pulled out all the tubes from her chest. They released her from CICU to the recovery wing that afternoon. By bedtime, she was already trying to stand up and walk around. Gwen spent the night with her. We were exhausted, but the prognosis was good.
On Sunday, the doctors removed her oxygen, and we were forced to allow her to walk. The doctors said she can whatever she is willing to do. Kenzie wanted to walk. She was tentative at first, but by the end of the day was wearing out her entire family.
Gwen told me that they both slept poorly at the hospital last night. The doctors and nurses came in throughout the night, interrupting their rest. But that didn't slow Kenzie down after her mom left for class this morning.
Kenzie is napping now. We're waiting to do an echo-cardiogram. That will help the doctors determine if we get to go home today. Can you believe that? She had surgery four days ago, and they might let her go home!
She's like a tiny Supergirl with a heart almost as good as new.
Thank you all for your prayers, well-wishes and positive thoughts. Our wee baby will be home soon.
Oh! During my downtime at the hospital, I finished my Halfway to St. Patrick's Day website… well, I got it started at least. May add other stuff. Let me know if there's anything interesting I can add.
So glad she’s doing well! Can only imagine how tough this was on you and Gwen.
