Westport: The Perfect Home Base For A Trip To County Mayo

Although there are plenty of places you can stay when you go to visit County Mayo, Westport is certainly one of the most charming. Set yourself up in this town as a home base and you’ll have the perfect spot to sample small-town Irish culture and hospitality after a day out and about. It’s walkable, colorful, and has plenty to see and do right there if you aren’t planning any other area adventures! It also provides fairly easy access to some of the most popular attractions in this area of Mayo, while offering excellent dining and pub options right in town!

Many visitors to Westport spend some time over at Croagh Patrick—a much revered mountain that according to tradition was the site of a 40 day fast by none other than St. Patrick himself. Many hiking enthusiasts enjoy making the trek up—which, you may want to take note—can be a bit of a challenge! If the day is clear the climbers are rewarded with stunning views of Clew Bay. In general, outdoor enthusiasts will find this region gives them ample opportunity to be active at all levels. From serious bicycle trails like those at the Great Western Greenway, to lush golf courses, to kayaking, there are many options for visitors who are wanting to be out in nature.

Those who wish to unwind and relax will find this town accommodates them perfectly as well. Simply strolling around with a camera (or cell phone) is an enjoyable experience. Preserve memories of the trip by photographing the flower arrangements, colorful storefronts in town, or the river, as the muse calls to you. The Westport Town Hall Theatre offers a variety of cultural programming year-round if you’d like to take in a show, and there’s also plenty to see if you visit the historic Westport House—even if it’s only to wander through its well-kept gardens to relax. Guided tours of this property are available, and there’s also a “Pirate Adventure Park” that’s geared specifically for some family fun!

For visitors seeking a place to stay while they experience what this area has to offer, Westport has a good variety of accommodations available—especially for such a small town. Since it’s such a popular tourist spot, you’ll find everything from cozy bed and breakfast options to high-end hotels in the area. Considerations for lodging should include things such as whether you want a room with a water view, or one that is more in the heart of the city. There are posh options that have on-site spas, and ones that are simply a basic place to lay your head after a day out. The choice is really up to you!

Irish music lovers shouldn’t miss a trip to Matt Molloy’s Pub (yes, it’s the Chieftains own!) for a pint and that special feeling of camaraderie one experiences so often in this country when people gather together. It’s a well-known venue, and worth a stop—just make sure you check some of the other worthy spots out as well, as there are plenty of them in town!
