It was 1993 when I was first hit with the bug of becoming a musician. I dedicated my life to learning everything there was available to learn. And I practiced. Oh boy, did I practice!
In 1995, I started my first band, Skander. We recorded a cassette called Intent on World Domination. Then I moved away for the summer after graduation. The band sort of fizzled away. I briefly joined a metal band called Plow Monday. I didn't last long as the singer, but I did take up management of the band for a short time. I learned a lot about the music business by managing them.
In 1997, I was determined to start my own band again. Thus arose Breastfed.
We were an Avant Quark Rock band. We had a unique sound, partially from my song lyrics and partially from the incredible bassist and drummer. But it was the second lead guitarist that I added to the band that really made us click. We started playing shows around town. We recorded a 6-song EP. Then the guitarist's head got a bit big and the band just sort of fell apart at the seams.
I was upset back then. But I'm good with it now. Tavis was a much better songwriter than I was. I realized when the band broke up that I was a really bad songwriter, in fact. I was determined to shake things up and learn how to write a good song. That's when I picked up the autoharp.
The autoharp was the “magic solution” for me. Songs almost wrote themselves. In 2008, I released my first solo CD Ichabod's Geography, followed by October Sessions. Neither album was great. But the production was there. There was a glimmer of decent songwriting. Those albums guided me in the direction of Celtic music. A year later, I would start the Brobdingnagian Bards.
CELTFATHER CLASSICS is the origin story of “The Celtfather”. On a 4 GB USB drive, I share the music that led to who I am today. It actually goes even further back with a mix tape I made in the 1987 pretending I was a DJ (along with my first ever music recording). Then it follows the story from Skander to Breastfed to Ichabod all the way to Marc Gunn, “The Celtfather”.
These are all of the recordings I made as a soloist up through 2009. You'll get my first awesome solo album, Soul of a Harper. You'll hear my first two Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers CDs along with a live album I did for the CD release of the second album. You'll enjoy my first hit CD as well as my first ever instrumental album. And you'll also hear the first four years of the Pub Songs Podcast.
This is a LOT of music and entertainment. It's all yours on the Celtfather Classics USB. I'm excited to share this huge compilation of music just for you!
